    • The results of one clinical study conducted by Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health and released in 2005 showed significant weight loss results for the Medifast plan when compared with a diet based on American Diabetes Association guidelines.

    • The study followed 112 overweight diabetic patients for 34 weeks of weight loss and 52 weeks of maintenance. After 86 weeks, the average weight loss was 13 pounds for those on the Medifast plan and a little over 5 pounds for those on the standard diet. The results are significant, but obviously much less than the results advertised by Medifast.

    • Medifast offers plans for transition and maintenance, since a large problem for many dieters is keeping the weight off. The transition phase lasts between four to six weeks, and begins slowly by including fruit for snacks. Exercising five days a week is mandated.

    • As of 2009, the Medifast plan costs about $11 a day, or about $300 a month when purchasing variety packages. For those who find this expensive, the Medifast website mentions that the average American adult spends about $16 a day on food.
